Why J. Cole is the Best Rapper of this generation
When you look at well-established rappers and MCs in the hip hop business, incontestably, J. Cole is on that list. In a highly competitive market characterized by rappers such as Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Jay Z, and Drake to mention a few, the North Carolina rapper brings versatility, lyrical genius, and introspective originality. The MC’s level of emotional and mental stability can be demonstrated throughout his career from the release of his first mixtape, “The Come up” to other mouth-watering albums with no promotions whatsoever. In 2018, the rapper released an album titled, “KOD”, which expressed his refreshing sense of social significance to the American culture. Here are the top reasons why J. Cole is the best rapper of this generation.
1. J. Cole is now a Grammy Winner
The North Carolina rapper won the first Grammy Award of his music career for Best Rap Song for his collabo with 21 savage “A lot”. The MC won this award during the non-televised 62nd Grammy Awards in a CBS broadcast paying tribute to the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant who recently died during a helicopter crash. Although he lost the Best Rap Album of the Year for “Revenge of the Dreamers” to Tyler, and the Best rap performance category for “The London” to DJ. Khaled, J.Cole walked home with one of the most envied awards that have not been won by comparable rappers in the past such as Nas, BIGGY, and 2PAC.
2.His music is highly relatable
Unlike rappers such as Kendrik whose music requires you to be in a type of mood to relate with him, J. Cole’s music is highly relatable. You do not have to be in a specific mental state to listen to J. Cole. When you compare J.Cole and Kendrik you will realize that the former is not as lyrically gifted or talented as Kendrik the same way 2PAC was not as gifted as Biggie. J. Cole does not hit you with incredibly poetic lines and words. His lyrics require you just to exist! Take an example of his song “Once an Addict”. The track, which was featured in the artist’s 2019 album, KOD. The song attempts to help young people stuck in various life addictions. The songwriter delivers a thoughtful and robust commentary on the systematic challenges that lead to various addictions such as drug and substance abuse, alcohol, social media, money, and sex. Each level of addiction inspires J. Cole to discuss the concept of addiction based on a self-accountability, which informs the listeners that he has endured the same challenges and has been affected by the same escape methods.
3. Humble Background
J. Cole was the first rapper to be signed by Jay-Z's record label, Roc Nation. That is not a cakewalk. His professional career gained an upward trajectory after the release of his second album, “The Warm Up”. His beginning filled with uncertainty and rejection paved the way for his real success. As a lyrical master, his experiences deeply enshrined in personal experiences, social issues and black experience, the rapper’s career is a statement of a real humble beginning.
4. His business teachers
One can see that Cole is slowly emulating the billionaire rapper, Jay-Z's example outside the rap business. He established his record label, Dream Ville, which has tremendously destabilized other acumen in the industry. With artists such as Bas, Earthgang, Lute, Cozz, and Omen, Dreamville's family cannot be underestimated.
5. He speaks to the people
You may be wasting your time trying to find information about this rapper because he likes to keep a low profile. He does not care about fame and he hates superficial fallacies and celebrity gossip. J.Cole is one of those artists that release a song without a feature, no commercial, no promos, no adverts, no billboards, and disappears for an extended period, and silently comes back. All he has to do is to put out one critical project and the listeners would be dying for it. If you do not believe me, check out these album sales in the first week of release. (Cole World Sideline Story-218,000, Born Sinner-297,000, Forest Hills Drive-353,000, and 4 Your Eyes Only-492,000).
That is it. J. Cole is the GOAT.
